This year's Summer Recreation Program, our 10th year, was one of the best seasons ever. There were over 240 kids, from third grade to 8th grade, who participated in summer recreations. That's an increase of more than 70 youngsters over last year's total. Our Mineola children had the opportunity to play games, participate in sports, have fun and learn while creating arts and crafts, and swim in our fabulous resident-only community pool. My sincere thanks go out to Director Christine Wiedman, Assistant Director Maryann Grimm, Arts and Crafts Director Nicole Carastro and all their staff members for the outstanding jobs they did this summer.
On Friday, July 24, the Village of Mineola and the County Seat Kiwanis hosted the 1998 Mineola Youth Day. The day was a revival of the event from years gone by. The revival of Mineola Youth Day came at the suggestion of County Seat Kiwanis members, and co-chairpersons of the event, John DaVanzo and Tony Bellissimo.
The day was held in conjunction with competition among children in each grade. There were four events with first and second place winners for both boys and girls in each grade. All the youngsters who participated received a ribbon as well. After the day's athletic events, the County Seat Kiwanis hosted a barbecue for us all.
Joining me for the fectivities were Mineola Village Trustees Maryanne Warnecke and Elizabeth Conlon, and our New york State Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell. Each of them joined me in awarding prize ribbons to the day's winners.
I am most grateful to the following people who assisted in the organization of this event and helped to bring about a fantastic result: Co-Chairs John DaVanzo and Tony Bellissimo, County Seat Kiwanis President Sandy Schmitt, Summer Recreation Program Director Christine Wiedman, Lillian Michalak, Celcilia Bastos and Ron Ciesinski for their help with cooking and serving lunch, and finally, the entire board of trustes for their dedication and support of this event.
I would also like to offer my official mayoral congratulations to the following list of participants who were winners of different athletic events during the 1998 Mineola Youth Day.
