Why did the man throw the Land O Lakes out the window? Because he wanted to see a "butter fly." Silly man, if he wanted to see butterflies all he had to do was patiently wait until the Mineola Nature Preserve Project Kickoff to be held Sept. 12.

You see, the Mineola Conservation Advisory Committee made a series of announcements last week in relation to their Nature Preserve Project, not the least of which was that a Butterfly Garden will be added to the original plans to transform the sump in Mineola Memorial Park into a bird sanctuary and wildlife preserve.

The plans for the preserve are to attract a cross section of flora and fauna such as butterflies, hummingbirds and rabbits, as well as to provide a priceless educational opportunity for the residents, in particular the children, of Mineola.

There will be a public meeting on the project to be held at the Mineola Village Hall and Community Center on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The Committee has been given the word that the local schools, including the non-district schools such as Chaminade, are ready and raring to go to get this project off the ground. However, additional help is needed and the Committee is asking for all interested organizations, such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc., to get involved as well.

Anyone interested in volunteering or learning more about the Nature Preserve Project or the Conservation Advisory Committee should call the Mineola Village Hall at 746-0750.
