The opening game of the MAA Minors Summer Camp season took place on Thursday, July 9, and great fun was had by all. Several pitchers took to the mound for the first time in their careers and many batters got their first taste of live pitching. Many hot bats were present, with Edward Proctor going three for three, Joe Werther going two for three, and Padraic Phelan also going two for three, including a tomahawked 0-2 fastball that drove in two runs. Fine pitching efforts were put forth by Michael Grieco and Steven Keeler, who combined for 11 strikeouts, and Brian Greene, who pitched a shutout and fanned two batters during his stint on the hill.

The Mineola Athletic Association's 10th annual soccer camp, with instructors provided by NOGA, will be held the week of Aug. 3 to 7 at Wilson Park. Sessions for boys and girls 5 to 15 years old will be held daily from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $85. Checks will be accepted on the day the camp begins, but MAA travel soccer coordinator Dolores Jose asks that anyone wishing to attend please call her at 742-7798 so she knows how many children in each age group plan to participate.
