The Mineola High School girls varsity softball team won the Long Island Class "B" Championship on Tuesday, June 9, at Mitchell Park. Before a crowd of over 400 enthusiastic fans (mostly from Mineola), the Lady Mustangs defeated the Suffolk champs from Islip by a score of 3-1.
The Mustangs had one goal all season. The goal was to go to the New York State Tournament. After winning the county title, there would be a wait of 12 long days before the Mustangs would find out who their opponent for the Long Island Championship would be. Islip was crowned the Suffolk champs, and the Mustangs were ready for them.
In the bottom of the first inning, Leslie Brown led off with a single. This was followed by another single by Captain Kristina Tsabasis. With runners on first and second, Kristin Cusato added some "pop" of her own, lacing a line drive triple into the outfield to score Tsabasis and Brown. Sarah Waters then singled in Cusato for a quick three run lead for the Mustangs.
The other "pop" in the game came from the pitches of senior Captain Katie Zunno, one of this year's most accomplished Long Island softball pitchers. Zunno kept the Islip batters off stride all game. At the start of the game, Katie told her team, "Get me a few runs and I'll do the rest." She kept her word and struck out the first seven batters she faced. She finished the game with 13 strikeouts, one walk, three hits and only one run scored. Katie would also get her 300th strikeout in the second inning. She now boasts a remarkable 309 strikeout for the season, and the season is not over. The Lady Mustangs played on Saturday, June 13, for the New York State Championship.
Leslie Brown went 3 for 3 with one run scored. Kristina Tsabasis went 2 for 3 with one run scored. Sarah Waters went 2 for 3 with one run scored and Kristin Cusato went 2 for 3 on a triple scoring two RBIs. Good luck at the State Tournament Mineola!
