The Chiefs game against Floral Park was a seesaw battle all the way on a rain slick field. The final score of 9-9 seemed appropriate with the effort both teams displayed.
Mineola dominated possession of the ball in the first quarter, but could only manage one goal. The second quarter belonged to Floral Park as they ended the half with a 5-4 lead.
The second half had the Chiefs taking the lead, but with Floral Park fighting back answering Mineola's challenge goal for goal. The fourth quarter had the spectators on the edge of their seats with anticipation. It went down to the wire as the Chiefs had a pair of extra man situations in the last two minutes due to Floral Park penalties. The boys had a few good opportunities but it seemed a tie score was meant to be as one shot rolled by the Floral Park goalie only to hit the pipe and rest on the goal line (no goal)! then in the last few seconds Floral Park gave it one more shot-which LaRose just got a piece of as it ricocheted off the goal pipe.
A player summary starts with Goalie Dan LaRose who adjusted to the tough wet field conditions, making some spectacular saves in the second half which helped keep the Chiefs in the game. Mineola, once again, got a dominant effort from middie David Redmond, winning 80 percent of the faceoffs for the day. The defense worked hard, led by T.C. Cribbins and Co. (Owen Shea, John Reedy, Dan Chaves). Then there was the offensive power as great shooting netted Mineola two goals apiece from Steven Miller and Billy Mecca. Middie Ivan "the hack" Anania made a perfect feed to Thomas Grimaldi on a fast break, one of four goals Grimaldi acquired using power moves as the day's leading scorer. The finesse for the day was provided by Jason "too tall" Peyer scoring one goal plus superb play picking up ground balls. Other spirited players included Andrew Murawski, Bobby Brown, Rory Singer nd Charles Castillo.
Fittingly, Mineola and Floral Park in a twist of fate are scheduled to meet again in their next game. A showdown which Assistant Coach Thomas Hughes stated, "We will be ready for."
