The Portuguese Lions Club held its annual breakfast recently at the Portuguese Club on Jericho Turnpike. More people than ever attended this very successful event. Among those we had a chance to talk to were: George and Josephine Sjursen, John and Dolores Cooke, Manuel Valente, Manuel Carvalho, Ruth and Bill Pokorny, Ed Fronckwicz, Walter and Grace Crosby, Jimmy Rowe, Flore and Jim Rowe, Marion and Tony Bellissimo, Jon and Judy Mahoney, John and Kathleen Mahoney, Richard and Lee Janelli, Ruth Kutzler, Vanessa Martins, Gladys, Angel, Herminia, Louis and Virginia Llanes, Thomas and Gladys Forte, Joan and Richard Kanyuk, Rose and Tony Bernardo, Brendan and Rosalie O'Connor, Tom, Marie and Donna O'Reilly, John DaVanzo and Helen and Mike Minchella.

Jacques Besancon of Holly Avenue, reading that I was a stamp collector, brought me his late wife Helen's album. She ahd received the album for her birthday in 1935. Helen Renken and family lived on Holly Avenue way back then. She had some real interesting stamps in her collection like those from Czarist Russia.

Walter Sysak III, grandson of the late president of the board of education Walter Sysak of Wellington Road, has been accepted at Chaminade High School, Class of 2002. Walter III is the son of Walter Sysak Jr. and Kathy Boner. Kathy and her husband Tom live in Point Lookout. Tom is a police detective.

Ronnie Cherkin, along with her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Alan and Liz, and her grandson Jeffrey, lunched at Seacrest Diner. Ronnie lives on Liberty Avenue

Jim Smith, good friend and Newsday sportswriter, was in the office recently with the doings of the boys' hockey team he coaches. Jim lives on Bauer Place.

Teri Ranfone dined at the popular Irish Glenerin Restaurant. Teri, president of the Chamber of Commerce, urges everyone to eat at Glenerin's to help them through this period of Herricks construction work.

Don't forget the huge bigger and better Mineola Fair to be held on May 16.

Marge and Jack Jubat also dined at Glenerin's.

Pete Fagioli, the former Mineola building inspector, still does some consulting work for the village.

Joe Grillo of Horton Highway is such an interesting man to talk to when you meet him around town.

It was really great when some 1,300 people sang Happy Birthday to Tom Flynn on Easter Sunday at Corpus Christi Church.

Easter Sunday brought some 300 antique cars to Garden City for a parade. We spotted Franklins, Moons, DeSotos, Nashes, Studebakers, Caddies, Bentleys, Rolls Royce, Thunderbirds, Triumphs, Lincolns, Buicks, Bel Airs, MGB, Chevies and Model T Fords in the procession.

Bob Small of Foch Boulevard, formerly an engineer with one of L.I. aerospace companies, tells us that he used to deliver the long forgotten Nassau Star Review when he was a boy. Remember that paper, born in 1835, and died shortly after the appearance of Newsday in the 1940s.

Tree City Mineola around our way is becoming "Treeless City." Just on our block alone some nine trees had to be taken down over a short period of time. As they become old and decayed, they pose a hazard every time we have a bad wind and rainstorm.

The Pool Board is being combined with the Recreation Committee to form one group to review the overall picture. There is some talk of changing our four-day-a-week bus service to seven days. Christine Weidman of Elderberry Road has been named Summer Activities Supervisor. She is a graduate of Adelphi University and teaches Phys. Ed. Angelo Scuccimarri is in charge of the overall recreation in the village. Kyle Teemsma remains the pool director.
