Dan and Betty Carolin of Violet Avenue will soon be moving to Florida. The village will miss them because they were an integral part of Mineola for many years. Dan was deeply involved in sports, both boys' and girls'. He was always so patient and understanding. We remember years ago he was coaching a girls' softball team and was playing catch with one of the players who was about 11 or 12 years old. He looked away for a moment when the girl threw the ball and hit him square in the eye. Dan had to go to the hospital, his eye was so badly damaged and, of course, the young girl was weeping. Dan had to calm her down and tell her not to worry, it was just an accident. Fortunately, the injury was not as severe as first suspected. Dan was also interested in politics and ran for trustee on the Hometown ticket. He was one of the top executives of LILCO and used to drive, for awhile, one of their electric cars. Betty and Dan will be missed.

Mark Tully doesn't live in the village, but seems to know just about everybody. Mark says, "Hey, I went to school in Carle Place and have lived in that community for 30 years. I guess I should know just about everybody." Mark, who is an accomplished horseman, also owns a business in town, See Mac.

A friend of ours ran into a man in Valley Stream and somehow the talk got around to Mineola and the man, a fellow named Bob Franklin, asked, "Does Abe Lincoln still work for the local paper?" It was decided that he must mean yours truly!

Billy Kazdan, son of Ruth and Lennie Kazdan of Colonial Avenue, has worked with the stage crew of Phantom of the Opera since it opened on Broadway. Recently, crossing a street in midtown, he was struck by a hit-and-run driver and very severely injured. After a long hospital stay, he is finally getting back on his feet. The Kazdans are quite a family; Ruth for years was a top reporter for the Mineola American. Lennie is amazing. Although he is blind, he still has the courage to be a downhill skier.
