School Tax Relief program (STAR) enacted by Chapter 389 of The Laws of 1997

A program to reduce school property taxes beginning with Senior Citizens, for the year 1998-99, was created under legislation this year.

"Residential real property may qualify for a partial exemption from school district taxes under the New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR)."

Applications must be filed every year by Dec. 31. To receive an application you may call the Nassau County Department of Assessment at 571-1500.

In order to qualify this year you must:

Be 65 years or older (with husband and wife one spouse needs to be 65).

The property must be a primary residence and can be a one, two or three family home, condo or co-op.

The total combined income of all owners cannot exceed $60,000.

In future years every homeowner will be eligible for a STAR-reduction in assessment. This reduction will increase every year for a three year period.
