Republican Nassau County Executive Thomas Gulotta experienced a huge win in his bid for re-election last Tuesday night as did New York State Assemblyman Michael Balboni, running for the senatorial seat vacated by the late Michael J. Tully, Jr. thereby retaining a Republican majority lead in the New York State Senate.

For the first time in six years Republican candidates Angelo Ferrara of New Hyde Park and James O'Connor of Westbury, have taken back two council seats on the North Hempstead Town Board unseating Democratic council incumbents John Fabio and Fred Pollack.

May Newburger retained her seat as town supervisor in a close race with opponent Republican Maureen O'Connell.

Ninth District Legislator Richard Nicolello of New Hyde Park, also regained his seat on the county legislature with a very large majority of the votes in his southern tier district.

At his Mineola headquarters, at midnight, prior to the finalization of the vote Balboni who has, at times, been criticized during the campaign for not striking back at the constant attacks by his opponent Doreen Banks, said, "This just proves the old adage, if you don't have anything nice to say about someone; don't say anything at all." Then in his acceptance speech delivered at the Republican gathering place at the Longshore Brewery in Garden City at about 1 a.m. Balboni said, "I dedicate this win to two very special women; one is my wife Stephanie, who has been so very helpful and supportive during the entire campaign and the other is to my next-door-neighbor suffering from both breast and ovarian cancer and whose only wish, all along, has been to see me become a state senator, well, this win is for you."

A last minute tally has declared GOP Linda Green the winner of the North Hempstead Town Clerk race against incumbent Deena Lesser.
