Mineola Junior Girls Fall Soccer News

Coach Franciotti's team remains undefeated after a very close game against Maria O'Connell's team on Oct. 6. Emily Vedric scored the team's first goal, with an assist from Lynn Franciotti early in the first half. The O'Connell team answered with a goal shortly after the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Marissa Jetter and Trisha Hahn quickly went on the offense with two on-goal kicks that were both blocked by the O'Connell defense. Cynthia Gamarra, assisted by Christine Medlock, scored the Franciotti team's second goal to win the game with a score of 2-1 against the O'Connell team. Outstanding defensive play from Alyssa Ortiz and Samantha Rain was key to keeping the scoring low. Natalie Matulich, playing midfield, was particularly skillful in trapping, controlling and returning the ball to her forwards. Arielle Iannucci and Julia Yan, playing forward, kept the ball downfield with great passing and very energetic play. The team's record is now 3-0-1.

Hwang Karate Studio at North Side

Master Charles Water's Hwang Karate Studio on Hillside Avenue in Williston Park was invited to teach the martial arts to all the children at North Side School in East Williston during its summer program.

Approximately 80 children participated in this special day. There was a group of kindergarten children at one workshop and the second grouping consisted of first- and second-graders.

The clinic was conducted by Ms. Quintano, Matthew Schmucker and Sean Thompson.

"We are pleased that we have been invited to teach the merits of the martial arts. Our program instills the principles of honesty, integrity and self-worth. The development of self-esteem is of utmost importance to everyone, especially our youth," stated Water.

Maria Swanberg, the director of this program, has invited us back year after year and is always the first to call Mrs. Water at Hwang Karate to book summer dates.

Pictured below are children who participated in this great event.

A very big "thank you" to Ms. Swanberg and all the students who helped out. Hwang Karate is always available to be a part of the educational learning process. Teaching "self-esteem" is invaluable and it is this studio's way of saying "thank you" to the community for its support for the last 10 years.

Klein Fuels Quinnipiac Volleyball Team's Offense

Junior right side hitter Karen Klein has led the Quinnipiac Women's Volleyball team to an overall record of 22-8 and an undefeated 8-0 NE-10 record so far this season. Klein, a physical therapy major with a GPA of 3.71, leads the squad and the state in blocks with 148, including 89 solo blocks. Klein has recorded 60 kills, 38 assists and 175 digs this season. Her efforts, including 11 block solos, 11 block assists and 19 digs in two matches earned her the MVP title of the New Haven Classic Tournament on Oct. 18.

Quinnipiac sits alone at the top of the NE-10 with an undefeated record of 8-0. The Braves recently defeated Bentley, the 1996 defending NE-10 Champions in a three-game sweep. They also defeated New Haven for the first time in history, breaking the Chargers' NCAA record for 109 home wins.

Angels Show True Grit Against Commack

The Mineola Angels under 14 girls travel soccer team visited the Commack Survivors to start the second half of the season. Playing their third game without their regular goal tender due to injury, the team, searching for help, found it from Maureen Cloghessy who stepped in and shut down Commack playing outstandingly for the whole game. The defense, led by Patricia Munson, Ashley McGuinness, Theresa Dolan and Christine Armstrong, kept Commack in its own end of the field almost the whole game. While midfielders Laura Lamm, Amy Shear, Christine Vann and Celina Bartley dribbled and fed perfect lead passes to a new-found offense led by Angelina Martinez - two goals, Jenifer Citro - one goal and Kelly Tahany scoring her first goal since joining the team.
