Lecture At Hofstra University

The Archeological Institute of America Lecture, Dr. Deborah Carlson will presents “The excavation of a Late Hellenistic Column Wreck at Kiilburun, Turkey” from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Public Room 105 Breslin Hall, Hofstra University. The remains of a ship carrying a marble column gives insight into the process of quarrying, transportation and monumental construction of the Greeks. Dr. Carlson is president of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A & M University.

Game Night At Game Master Grill

Come learn and play “Shufflin’ Feet” at GMG on Tuesday Jan. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m., or on any Tuesday in January. This is a fast paced card game. Be the first to collect all of the red chips by playing high valued foot-shaped cards in your deck. Every roll of the dice changes the game play. Ages 8+, 2 to 4 players

Volunteers Sought for Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. The next five-session training cycle will be starting at the end of September 2012 at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Creative Cups

The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by becoming a sponsor. Submitted creations will be included in the auction/gala (to be held on March 14, 2013 at Adelphi University in Garden City). Senior Basketball

Mineola residents 50-years or older can participate in pickup basketball games on Mondays and Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. at Village Hall on Washington Avenue in Mineola. Half court games will be played in the community center. For more information, call Russell Sutherland at 746-0811.

Free Breast Cancer Support Groups 

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m. 

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc....it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
