The Archeological Institute of America Lecture, Dr. Deborah Carlson will presents “The excavation of a Late Hellenistic Column Wreck at Kiilburun, Turkey” from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Public Room 105 Breslin Hall, Hofstra University. The remains of a ship carrying a marble column gives insight into the process of quarrying, transportation and monumental construction of the Greeks. Dr. Carlson is president of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A & M University.

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. The next five-session training cycle will be starting at the end of September 2012 at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc....it’s all in demand. The Village of Mineola Board recently approved Maxim Hygiene, a feminine hygiene products distribution company, to sell food at its 121 East Jericho Tpke. location.
Owner Kenneth Alvandi plans to offer gluten-free food and natural beverages at the shop. He’s operated in Mineola since January.
“Everything we would buy has a long shelf life,” he said. “It’s all pre-packaged, not cooked.”

The Mineola School District Board of Education assessed the district’s performance in recent New York State assessment and Regents testing; performance that Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael
Nagler noted was in need of improvement at a July 24 board meeting.
Nagler addressed issues that students have been encountering with the recently-mandated state assessments, noting the difference in effectiveness between what he called “formative testing,” or testing on a regular basis, and “summative testing,” which is done annually, typically at the end of the school year.

Mineola Hurricanes 10U offense was too much for L.I. Saints in 14-5 rout on Thursday July 17, at Willis Avenue Field in Mineola. With 11 runs in the first three innings, The Hurricanes left no doubt about the eventual outcome.
An RBI triple by Kevin Pusey, a steal of home by Kevin Pusey, and an RBI single by James Raziano during the first inning and an RBI single by Jack Mackay, a three-run triple by T.J. McManus put runs on the board early.
