Tai Chi For Breast Cancer Patients 


A Free Path to Wellness Workshop for past and present breast cancer patients. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese exercise sometimes referred to as “moving meditation” due to its slow steps and deep breathing. These movements help the body become relaxed, help lower blood pressure and boost the immune system. People of all ages can do this exercise at their own level. Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended. Bring bottled water. The workshop is held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Ave., Adelphi University, Garden City. No charge. Volunteers Sought For Breast Cancer Program

If you’ve had breast cancer and want to pay it forward become a hotline volunteer. Women and men who are breast cancer survivors and others who are concerned about breast health issues can become volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in Garden City. Volunteers can help by doing fundraising and publicity, as well as by answering hotline calls. Hotline volunteers provide emotional support, information and referral services to callers with breast health concerns. Although the program is housed on Long Island, hotline services and telephone counseling are available to callers throughout New York State. The next five-session training cycle will be starting at the end of September 2012 at the Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. Creative Cups

The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by creating an “art bra” or becoming a sponsor. Submitted creations must be received by Oct. 15 to be included in the auction/gala (to be held on March 14, 2013 at Adelphi University in Garden City). Those wishing to create a bra are encouraged to sign up early, as entrants will be limited to 200. Creative Cups celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those lost to this terrible disease. •”Williamsburg” Exhibit. Born in Brooklyn in 1941, Dick Lopez frequented Williamsburg for most of his youth, along the way developing the roots that would ultimately define who he is. It is for this reason that he calls himself a true Brooklynite. Despite the various paths that Dick has taken throughout his life, he still finds that his heart is drawn to the Williamsburg community. Only now, he observes it with older eyes behind the lens of a Nikon, capturing the progression of a city that has been changing since his childhood. In shooting this work, Dick hopes to depict the past, present, and future for this historic borough. His focus is clear – to photograph how the not-so-subtle transformations of this community are influenced by not only real estate developers and investors, but old-time residents, recent immigrants, artists, merchants and the abundance of diverse ethnic and religious cultures. Dick has no doubt that the imminent evolution of Williamsburg will allow him to discover yet another dimension of more than just the city itself – perhaps a deeper understanding of self. This exhibition is presented by the LI Center of Photography. On view through Aug. 29 at the Shelter Rock Library, 165 Searingtown Rd., Albertson.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc....it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.
