The Massapequa High School boys’ baseball team isn’t the only championship squad coming out of that fine institution these days.
The girls’ track team had a remarkable 2009 season in their own right. They were division champs, conference champs and now for the first time in the school’s history, they are Nassau County Class AAA Champions in Outdoor Track & Field.
Led by senior Captains Liz Henry, Keri Marks, Paige McAtee and Alex Gentry, they were undefeated in the 2009 Outdoor T&F season.
The distance team continued to be a strong force. A top star for that squad included junior Emily Marchini, the county champion for the 3000 Meter Run. Emily also received All-County honors for finishing third in the 1500 Meter Run.
The 4x400 team of Keri Marks, Amanda Schmidt, Paige McAtee and Kelly Burke were county champions winning their relay. Stepping up in their races and field events were juniors Kerri Dutton, county champion Pole Vaulter and Lauren Kappleman, county champion Triple Jumper.
Other All-County Athletes included Julianne Licari in the Steeplechase, Meri Dic in the 100 Meter Hurdles, and Kelly Burke in the 400 Intermediate Hurdles. Rebecca Baldinger who finished fifth in the 3000 Meter Run and Heather Sweeney who finished fourth in the Triple Jump and fifth in the Long Jump. Lauren Kappleman also finished sixth in the 100 Meter Dash and led the 4x100 team to a fifth place finish.
Many of these girls represented Massapequa as they traveled to Boston for the Indoor National Championships and the University of Pennsylvania for the Penn Relays. Coaches Michael Lisa, Mike Dellicurti and Rich Langsam worked all year to prepare them for competition and are very proud of the girls’ accomplishments.
