Last Thursday, the Massapequa boys volleyball team scored an impressive trifecta: They captured the Nassau County Conference I title, they finished the season undefeated and they did so in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to top Port Washington, 3-2.
In the championship game, the Chiefs won the first two matches, 25-23 and 25-22. It appeared that they were on their way to another easy win. But Port Washington battled back, taking the next two games, 16-25 and 19-25. In the final set, the one that would decide the county title, Massapequa fell behind, 19-18 before staging a comeback to win the set, the game, and the title.
That the Chiefs would make a stirring comeback to win was not surprising considering that they had fallen behind Port Washington in both the first and second sets before winning those contests. For the title game, Brian Smith had 12 kills and 26 assists, while Vinny DelGuidice chipped in with 61 digs. Scores by Smith and Jesse Finkel helped to turn the tide in the final set. With the win, the Chiefs finished the year with a remarkable 21-0 record.
Massapequa advanced to the title game by defeating Uniondale, 3-0 in a May 21 home game and Long Beach, also 3-0 in a May 25 semifinal contest.
