The Farmingdale Devils U9 baseball team continued their successful summer season by capturing the championship in the Plainedge Baseball Summer Tournament. The Devils went 8-0 in the regular season, including tough wins over the
Farmingdale Greendogs and the the Bethpage Eagles.
In the playoffs the Devils defeated th Greendogs 15-5 and move on to face the Shelter Rock Redman. The Redman also went undefeated in the regular season. After falling behind by two in the top of the first the Devils responded quickly.
After Sam Cordova led off with a walk, Nicholas Napolitano, Timmy Purek and Gavin Weinstock all delivered crushing doubles to give the Devils a 3-2 lead. The game was highlighted by great Devil defense. Johnny Lightening Lospitalier snagged three ground balls and a line drive at second.
Anthony Copogna handled several ground balls and and also snagged a line drive to end a threat.
The Devis extended their lead as the game progressed. RBI hits by Robert Traitta, Shane Schwartz and Chris Barisi extended the lead to 8-2 The pitching of Napolitano and Cordova shut the Redman down after the first inning.
In the 6th, with a 8-2 lead, Napolitano tired, and Timmy Purek was brought in to quell the Redmen bats. Anothony Copogna’s diving stop of sure RBI grounder helped stem the comeback. Purek struck out the final batter to secure the game for the Devils 8-5.
The Devils would like the volunteers at Plaindege Baseball who worked hard to make this tournament a success.
