The Hicksville Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Long Island Running Club collaborated on what turned out to be one of the highlights of the Long Island running and racing summer — the inaugural Discover Hicksville 5 Kilometer Run on Saturday, August 17.
Starting and finishing at Cantiague Park, more than 200 runners enjoyed a great race through the streets of northwest Hicksville, and a terrific post-race barbecue. Fifty-five youngsters took part in the 1/4 mile Fun Run that preceded the main event.
Among the list of finishers was 52-year-old Marty Schimmele of Massapequa who was the 99th finisher overall and the 5th finisher in the 50-54 age group. Marty’s excellent time of 41 minutes, 27 seconds, was an 8:17 per mile pace for the 5 miles.
GLIRC’s Director of Development Sue Fitzpatrick and the Chamber’s Marlo Signoracci were a great team as the co-directors of the Run. Marlo actually wore three different hats in connection with the event - as a GLIRC member, as a Chamber member and as the General Manager of key sponsor Econolodge of Hicksville.
