Pumas Scratch Their Way To Championship

After winning taking home the hardware in last year’s Arch Capital Group Cup, the Plainedge Pumas continued their winning ways this season by capturing the ENY Upper 90 Cup last month, defeating the Sound Beach Spirit, 4-2, for the girls under 14 title.

“It was an exciting, competitive game,” said Plainedge coach Jean Matthews. “We had the better of play in the second half and that made the difference.”

Jessica Bernstein scored two goals for Plainedge, while Alexis Aschettino and Franceca Picicci each added one to give the Pumas the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association championship.

Sound Beach received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as selected by the game referees. Now living in Ohio, the remarkable namesake of this award was seemingly involved in every facet of New York soccer for decades and is a member of the Halls of Fame of Eastern New York, the US Amateur Soccer Association and the Long Island Junior Soccer League.
