Top Spot For Boys’ Baseball, Lacrosse Squads

MHS teams head into playoff action

The regular season of spring sports is at an end, and Massapequa High School sports squads are where they usually are – right at the top of the conference.

The boys’ baseball team has run away with the Conference AA-I conference crown. Going into the final games against Farmingdale, the Chiefs are sporting an 11-1 record in conference play and a 13-2 mark overall.

In recent wins, Rob Fitzpatrick and Ryan McCormick have been the pitching stars. In a thrilling come-from-behind win over Oceanside, clutch hits by Nick Fannareon and Bobby Honeyman gave the Chiefs a 7-6 win.

Even more impressive has been the boys’ lacrosse team. As of press time, the Chiefs held an 8-0 record in Conference I play and an 11-1 mark overall. After losing a close match to Chaminade, the Chiefs have run off 10 straight wins, most recently over Oceanside, Plainview JFK and Farmingdale. Ian Kirby, Brandon Savona, Dan Muller, Jimmy Brynes, Craig Berger, Jack Korner, Paul Bentz, and Ryan Kirby have been among the offensive stars for the mighty Chiefs.

The girls’ softball team has enjoyed a winning season with its record so far coming in at 7-6 in Conference I play and 11-7 overall. In the win over Oceanside, the Lady Chiefs were paced by Renee Vaiano’s superb pitching and offensive heroics by Stephanie Giurlando (solo home run) and Liz Doherty, two hits and one run batted in.

The playoff season will be coming up shortly and Massapequa sports squads look to take their prowess beyond conference play and into Nassau County, Long island, and New York State action.
