And indeed that has been case so far as the Lady Chiefs, with wins over Freeport and MacArthur, have advanced to the finals of Conference AA-I play for the first time since 2009.
Massapequa advanced to the big game with a 56-42 win over MacArthur on Tuesday night. On Saturday at 2 p.m., Massapequa will play for the title in a contest against top-seeded Baldwin at LIU Post.
Home court advantage helps, so did the play of Morgan Roessler. In the semifinal game, Massapequa jumped out to a modest 12-10 first quarter lead, one that they expanded to a 30-19 half time advantage. Roessler scored all of her 14 points in the first half, helping to give Massapequa a lead they would never relinquish.
Leading the way for Massapequa in the second half was Lauren Van Buren, who ended the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds. As usual, the scoring attack was well balanced with 10 players registering points. Both Taylor Byrne and Rachel Sieber contributed all-important three-point goals.
Ranked No. 2 in Conference AA-I play, the Lady Chiefs started their playoff run with a 53-36 win over Freeport.
Playing at home, Massapequa followed their familiar pattern of getting off to a quick start and then wearing down their opponents. Against Freeport, Massapequa jumped out to a 15-10 first quarter lead, buttressed it with a 15-5 third quarter run, before holding off Freeport in the final frame for the win.
Leading the way for Massapequa was Morgan Roessler with 17 points, followed by Danielle Doherty and Nicole Scicutella with nine points each. In the middle Lauren Van Buren pulled down 16 rebounds.
