This year, the Massapequa High School girls’ basketball squad is jumping out of the gate quickly. Not only are they undefeated in Conference AA-I play, they are doing so by grabbing big first quarter leads and then sailing on to victory. Their current record is 11-0 overall and 7-0 in Conference AA-I play.
Back from a successful first half of the season, the Lady Chiefs remain in top form, defeating Hempstead, Syosset, and Oceanside all by lopsided margins.
As usual, the Massapequa scoring attack has been balanced. In the 67-29 win over Hempstead, Sarah Grzybowski scored 12 points, but the Lady Chiefs also had 11 other players scoring points, including Rachel Sieber with nine points and Sabrini Fregosi and Michelle Lupoli with eight points.
The one Massapequa star that didn’t score in the Hempstead game was Danielle Doherty. But Danielle made up for that by scoring 16 points in the 64-32 win over Syosset. Morgan Roessler had another stellar game, scoring 13 points and eight other Lady Chiefs hoopsters also registered on the scoring board.
In the Hempstead game, Massapequa jumped out to a 16-2 lead, while in the road game win over Syosset, the high scoring first quarter saw Massapequa take a 27-11 lead, pulling away in the contest with a 19-5 second quarter run.
Finally, in the Jan. 19 65-26 shellacking of Oceanside, the Lady Chiefs were paced by the double digit scoring of Danielle Doherty and Morgan Roessler. In this game, no less than 10 Massapequa players scored baskets, as the big leads accumulated early in the game allowed everyone to get in the game and contribute.
