Congratulations to Glenn Morse of Massapequa, John Stauber of North Massapequa, Sherry Bellovin of North Massapequa, and John Niesen of Massapequa Park, each of whom won an award in the inaugural Great Prostate Cancer 5 Kilometer Run on Sunday morning, Nov. 22.

Champions On and Off the Hockey Field

The Massapequa Varsity Field Hockey Team, coached by Barbara Lowell and Kristin Steck, won this year’s 2009 Nassau County Championship by beating Baldwin 2-1 at Adelphi University.

Scouting Roots at Sagamore Hill

Scouting in the Massapequa’s began in about the 1920s. The Theodore Roosevelt Council, Boy Scouts of America was formed in 1917 to serve the youth of Nassau County. In September of 1997, the council changed its name from the Nassau County Council to honor and recognize Theodore Roosevelt, its founder and first council commissioner. Roosevelt also was the first committeeman of Oyster Bay Troop 39. Currently the Theodore Roosevelt Council is a self-supporting, non–profit corporation. The Scouting program in Nassau County is governed by an executive board. The day-to-day business of Scouting is carried out by a professional and support staff under the leadership of Scout Executive David Richardson.

Scholarship for Local Basketball Star

Massapequa resident Jessica DeNicola, currently a senior at Long Island Lutheran High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend Molloy College and compete on its Girls Division II Basketball squad next year. Jessica will be receiving a full academic and athletic scholarship. Long Island Lutheran is located in Brookville. Championship Efforts From MHS Soccer, Volleyball Squads

Another great winter sports season has ended for local high school squads in the Massapequa area. As the action moves onto basketball, here are the statistics of the stars that made it such a memorable year for the Massapequa and Plainedge High School teams.

Tennis Team to Play in State Finals

Massapequa’s Girls Tennis Team, coached by Mike Pavlides (pictured), had a successful season. Samantha Gann, the #4 seed, reached the semifinals in singles and earned All-County and All-State honors for the third consecutive year. The doubles team of Jessica Sickles and Megan Tamborino reached the semifinals, defeating the #4 seed from Port Washington in the Quarterfinals, and also earning All-County and All-State honors. The partners lost in the semifinals to the eventual County Champs; however, they defeated Manhasset in the consolation match, which qualified them for the state finals. Congratulations to the team. MHS Volleyball Dynasty Rolls On

Lady Chiefs Take County Title, Then Fall to Ward Melville

The football seasons for both Massapequa and Plainedge high schools ended in disappointment, but the Massapequa High School girls’ volleyball dynasty rolled on to another county title.

On Nov. 9, the Lady Chiefs won their 10th consecutive Nassau County title, defeating Long Beach three games to one. The Lady Chiefs won the first two games, 25-21 and 25-23, only to see Long Beach battle back and take the next two matches, 25-21 and 26-24. However, led by star setter Katie Bryson, Massapequa stormed back to win the final match and the title, 25-20.

Braves Romp Through Baseball Heaven Tourney

The 13U Long Island Braves became the Columbus Day Wood Bat Tournament Champions by defeating the Long Island Explosion in the finals at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank.

The Braves compiled an impressive 6-0 tournament record over the entire weekend of play.

The Braves are scheduled to compete in the upcoming Fall Brawl Tournament at the Diamond Nation Sports Complex in Flemington, NJ.

Cross Country Team Competes in North Carolina

Members of the Massapequa High School – Main Campus Varsity Girls Cross Country Team, under the coaching skills of Mike Lisa, had the opportunity to expand their horizons and make Massapequa famous down south when they participated in the Great American Cross Country Festival. The competition featured some of the finest teams from across the United States. The Lady Chiefs left a lasting impression at the festival, finishing fifth overall in the Girls Seeded Invitational Race. Senior Emily Marchini won the race with a time of 18:36, the fastest time of any Massapequa Cross Country athlete in two decades. Plainedge Roars Into First Place Tie

Offensive Fireworks Give Red Devils a Comeback Win

It was the biggest game of the year for the Plainedge High School football squad. And the Red Devils did not disappoint, traveling to Lynbrook to topple the previously unbeaten squad by a 42-35 margin.

The win puts Plainedge in a first-place tie with Lynbrook in Conference III play. Plainedge now sports a 7-1 regular season record.
