Farmingdale State sophomore and Massapequa native Melissa Bonilla finished 9th individually for the women’s team in a time of 21:53.37 on the 8,000-meter course at the Skyline Conference Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx.
For her sterling season, Ms. Bonilla was also named to the Women’s Second Team All-Conference squad.
The Town of Oyster Bay will host its second annual College Hockey Challenge, open to all town residents. According to Town Supervisor John Venditto, on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m., the Hofstra University Pride Ice will take on the Fordham University Rams in a men’s Ice Hockey game, with the winner receiving the prestigious Supervisor’s Cup Trophy. The event will be held at the state-of-the-art TOB Ice Skating Center in Bethpage.
“This game will showcase some of the best talent in the area,” Venditto said. “Admission to the game is free, and in addition to seeing some top tier action on the ice, Town of Oyster Bay Youth Hockey players will be given a chance to take part in free pregame on-ice youth clinics, beginning at 5 p.m. These unique clinics will help participating youngsters hone their ice hockey skills, gaining valuable tips and insights from some of the area’s most accomplished players.”
The most successful season in the history of the Massapequa boys’ volleyball team has come to an end.
This past weekend, the Chiefs, fresh off of their first ever Long Island title, traveled upstate for a one-day tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, one that would determine the state title.
Boyd Carrington of Amityville outlegged Robis Degirmenci of Port Washington to the finish line of the third annual “Blue Ribbon 5 Kilometer Run,” as 372 runners and walkers were on hand at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury on Sunday, Nov. 13. This Integrated Medical Foundation event helps promote better Men’s Health and helps draw attention to the importance of early detection of prostate cancer.
Barney Williams knows pain.
He felt it on September 11, 2001, when his brother’s oldest son was killed at the age of 24. He felt it in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed his New Orleans home. He felt it last year, when his father succumbed to pancreatic cancer.
And he feels it right now, only this is a different type of pain, the kind that manifests in the muscles in his legs and shoots up along his spine.
With the win, the Chiefs advance to the New York State tournaments, held at Syracuse University. On Saturday, Nov. 19, they will play in a one-day tournament to determine the state champions.
The third-seeded Farmingdale State women’s tennis team fell 5-3 in a hard fought match against the Golden Eagles in a recent Skyline Semifinal match held at St. John the Baptist High School. The Rams season ends with an 8-5 record, while St. Joseph’s (10-3) moved onto the Skyline Championship match against top-seed Mount Saint Mary.
Amanda Feld of Massapequa Park has won the Black Belt Grand Championship for the 2010-2011 WKKL tournament season. Ms. Feld, who is a student at the American Black Belt Academy in Massapequa Park has been studying karate under the instruction of Tom LoVarco since she was 4 years old and has been featured on the Montel Williams Show.
The Massapequa Chiefs finished the regular season last Saturday with another convincing win, defeating Hempstead, 54-0, giving them a 6-2 record as they head into the postseason with their offense, burning on all cylinders.
The Chiefs jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and continued to score in all four quarters as they finished the regular season with a 6-2 record, tied for second with Baldwin in the highly competitive Conference I division. (MacArthur, Freeport, and East Meadow are all tied for first with 7-1 records.)
The Skyline Conference released the eighth Women’s Tennis report for the 2011 season this afternoon, including Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week, Honor Roll and Conference statistics.
Farmingdale State College Freshman Jessica Sickles of Massapequa Park was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week for women’s tennis.
