First Annual Michael J. Califano Memorial Hockey Game A Success

On Sunday, March 6, the Nassau County Police Department and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department hockey teams played the First Annual Michael J. Califano Memorial Hockey Game at Nassau Veterans Coliseum for a fund that has been established to benefit the children of police officer Michael Califano. All those who wish to donate can do so by sending a check to the Nassau County Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association at 89 East Jericho Turnpike, Mineola NY 11501. Make checks payable to the Michael J. Califano Memorial Fund.
 

Students In Youth for Outreach Walkathon

This is a story about the budding sense of altruism that is being instilled in the children of the St. Rose of Lima Church community.  These children are developing a true sense of concern for others and have found a way to help those who are living with circumstances that are very difficult to comprehend.  Last January, more than 650 fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade religious education students from St. Rose of Lima Church, Massapequa participated in the Youth for Outreach walkathon at the Westfield Sunrise Mall.   Families, friends and parish staff joined the students as they carried inspirational posters and dressed in class theme outfits, which unified the groups as they walked for the needs of others.

Cheerleaders Place Third In National Competition

At their first national showing, the Plainedge High School Varsity Cheerleading squad, coached by Kerri Boye, captured a third-place win in the Super Varsity category at the UCA’s 2011 National High School Cheerleading Championship this February. The team qualified to attend the contest as a result of their performance during the UCA Regional competition in December.

Massapequa Falls To Uniondale In First Round Play

Last week, the Massapequa High School boys’ basketball team lost in first round playoff action and this past Feb. 23, the girls squad also experienced the same unhappy fate. On Feb. 23, the Lady Chiefs fell to Uniondale, 49-46 to end their winning 2010-2011 season.

 

Mottau Signing at Sunrise Mall

On Wednesday, Feb. 16, New York Islander star Mike Mottau had a successful signing at Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. Fans not only were photographed with Mottau, they also received his autograph free of charge.

Mottau joined the Islanders last September. A native of Quincy, MASS. Mottau is a 10-year veteran of the National Hockey league. Originally drafted by the New York Rangers, Mottau has played for the Rangers, the Calgary Flames, and the New Jersey Devils before joining the Islanders.

Chiefs Fall to Hempstead In Playoff Action

The Massapequa boys’ basketball team enjoyed a winning season in 2010-2011 but it came to an end in the first round of the playoffs as the Chiefs fell to perennial powerhouse Hempstead, 49-41 in Conference AA-I action.
