Portledge School Varsity Girls Win Basketball Invitational

The Portledge School Varsity Girls Basketball team recently won the 2011 Portledge Basketball Invitational.  The Lady Panthers defeated Martin Luther 56 - 40 in the championship game on Saturday, Dec. 10. Ceci Mulry of Glen Cove and Tamara Simpson of North Babylon were selected to the All-Tournament team. Ms. Simpson was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.  This is the girls’ first championship in this event since 1996.

 County avoids shutdown but faces major service cuts and layoffs

Nassau County, this past week, was facing the reality of a government shutdown until the fiscal control board NIFA voted to approve County Executive Edward P. Mangano’s $2.6 billion 2012 budget and multi-year financial plan. In approving the plans, NIFA moved to remain in control of Nassau finances through 2015.

Chairman of the NIFA Board of Directors Ronald Stack said during the Dec. 8 vote: “The plan is far from ideal… this plan holds significant risks… but although far from perfect, rejection of the plan at this moment could result in significant disruption in the county, a possible closing of the capital markets to the county… and a possible shut down of county government.”

Two Massapequa freshmen, tennis stars at Farmingdale State College, have just completed their easy conquest of the Skyline Conference.

Jessica Sickles has been named Player of the Year for 2011, while Alex Bentz is the Skyline Conference’s Rookie of the Year.

The honors culminated a remarkably successful season for the two Massapequa High School alumna.

Leads Lady Blue Devils to NCAA Finals

A great season has ended for the Duke University women’s soccer team. On Thursday, Dec. 2, The Lady Blue Devils defeated Wake Forest, 4-1 to advance to the finals of the NCAA’s College Cup final, held in Kennesaw, GA. There Duke lost a tough one to Stanford, 1-0.

Starring for the Lady Blue Devils was Massapequa native Kim DeCesare. Earlier, Kim scored the winning goal in a 3-0 win over Long Beach State, one that took Duke to the Final Four.

“I haven’t been happier, that was the most important goal I ever scored, I think,” said Ms. DeCesare after the big game. “This is one of the happiest moments of my life!”


All Star Recognition for Melissa Bonilla

Farmingdale State sophomore and Massapequa native Melissa Bonilla finished 9th individually for the women’s team in a time of 21:53.37 on the 8,000-meter course at the Skyline Conference Cross Country Championships on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx.    

For her sterling season, Ms. Bonilla was also named to the Women’s Second Team All-Conference squad.

Teams to compete for the Supervisor’s Cup

The Town of Oyster Bay will host its second annual College Hockey Challenge, open to all town residents. According to Town Supervisor John Venditto, on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m., the Hofstra University Pride Ice will take on the Fordham University Rams in a men’s Ice Hockey game, with the winner receiving the prestigious Supervisor’s Cup Trophy. The event will be held at the state-of-the-art TOB Ice Skating Center in Bethpage.

“This game will showcase some of the best talent in the area,” Venditto said. “Admission to the game is free, and in addition to seeing some top tier action on the ice, Town of Oyster Bay Youth Hockey players will be given a chance to take part in free pregame on-ice youth clinics, beginning at 5 p.m. These unique clinics will help participating youngsters hone their ice hockey skills, gaining valuable tips and insights from some of the area’s most accomplished players.”

Barney Williams competes in NYC Marathon

Barney Williams knows pain.

He felt it on September 11, 2001, when his brother’s oldest son was killed at the age of 24. He felt it in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina destroyed his New Orleans home. He felt it last year, when his father succumbed to pancreatic cancer.

And he feels it right now, only this is a different type of pain, the kind that manifests in the muscles in his legs and shoots up along his spine.
