Letter: Planned Parenthood Calls on Senators to Reject Political Agenda of House Members

Last month’s vote by the House of Representatives to strip Planned Parenthood of all federal funding reflects the pursuit of an extreme political agenda by the Republican House leadership.

It is also an outrageous assault on the millions of Americans who rely on Planned Parenthood for primary and preventive health care, including lifesaving breast and cervical cancer screenings, annual exams, birth control, HIV testing, and STI testing and treatment.

This amendment does nothing to reduce the deficit; it does nothing to improve the economy. Its surest outcome is to take health care away from American women who cannot afford to pay for it on their own.

One in five American women has received care from a Planned Parenthood health center at some point in her life, underscoring the fact that Planned Parenthood is an essential health care provider in this country. In Nassau County, Planned Parenthood provides care to over 13,000 women and men each year. Eliminating Title X and Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood means over 7,800 of our patients may have nowhere else to turn to for health care.

Even the supporters of this extreme legislation do not pretend that this political attack on Planned Parenthood will save a single cent in the budget. Most importantly, those who want to put Planned Parenthood out of business have not explained how the three million Americans throughout the country currently served by Planned Parenthood’s more than 800 health centers will get the health care they need if this dangerous policy becomes law.

It now falls to senators from both parties to join together to reject this extreme approach, restore common sense, and guarantee that Planned Parenthood and the millions of Americans who count on us for health care are protected. Ensuring that Planned Parenthood serves millions of women each year is what mainstream Americans want and expect from the United States Senate.

We call on the Senate to defeat any bill that targets Planned Parenthood or women’s health care.
