On Thursday, June 21, Plainedge High School held its graduation ceremonies at Hofstra University. Through heartfelt speeches and performances, it was evident that the Class of 2012 was filled with high achievers, worthy of all the accolades and scholarships they received.
The surprise guest speaker was Senator Charles Schumer (D – New York). Schumer shared his own experiences with the students and urged them to be energentic when following their dreams. Speeches were also delivered by Class of 2012 Valedictorian Casey Vieni and Salutatorian Alanna Ticali, who each recounted their memories of Plainedge and offered words of inspiration to their peers.
“We are limited only by our imaginations,” Casey said. “We must learn to balance conformity and individuality.”
“Plainedge has taught us how to balance the two to become successful,” Alanna added. “We must face the future with positivity and conviction, but we must never forget our past.” She concluded her speech by singing a verse from the song “Because I Knew You.”
Following congratulatory addresses from Board President Catherine Flanagan and Superintendent Dr. Edward Salina, students were presented for graduation and received their diplomas from administrators. The successful candidates for graduation moved their tassels from left to right, officially marking their move to alumni.
