It looks like an early summer is here and with it, more hot weather. One way folks used to beat the heat was to head into their favorite movie theatre for hours of pleasurable entertainment. You can still do that in Massapequa. When the hot weather hits, the cool, air-conditioned Bar Harbor Library provides not only a respite from the humidity but the kind of old-fashioned movies that once packed theatres across the nation.
If Saturday, June 11 is a scorcher—-or even if it’s a pleasant day—-moviegoers are in for another treat from the endless supply of classic movies from the secret underground vault where John Carpenter has the entire Golden Age of Hollywood at his fingertips.
At 2 p.m. on June 11, the Movie Man will be showing the RKO 1932 classic, The Half Naked Truth, a film described by Carpenter himself as a “top speed screwball comedy” and one of his favorite movies.
The movie stars Lupe Velez and Lee Tracy in one of those Depression-era stories in which modest folk attempt to make it to the big time. The Movie Man claims that be has been holding back on showing this “insane” classic until June as it is his birthday month and he wants to give his legion of film fans that he now feels like family with the happiness that the movie has always given him. Evidently, the film’s writers and producers knew that a film buff like Carpenter was down the road a few decades. In fact, the only song that Ms. Velez sings is entitled, O! Mister Carpenter, a message that has not fallen on deaf ears.
The Half Naked Truth focuses on a carny promoter (Tracy) who transforms one his dancers (Ms. Velez) into a Broadway star, using only his talent for lies, con, and a dynamic personality. All of the Movie Man’s own productions come with a bonus and in this case, Carpenter’s favorite comedian, Charley Chase will alight from Carpenter’s collection to the Bar Harbor movie screen in the two-reeler, Arabian Tights.
Being a loyal fan of the Movie Man can have its benefits as one such fan, Arlene Greif of Wantagh who has been attending every Carpenter filming will be honored on her June 11 birthday with a DVD gift from Carpenter himself.
