Two Plainedge High School seniors, Leanne Falzon and Olivia Hathaway have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation received this honor. Although they will not continue in the 2011 competition for National Merit Scholarships, being named a Commended Student recognizes that Leanne and Olivia placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Leanne is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Science Honor Society, art club, and pit orchestra. She is an active volunteer, helping children with special needs and the book buddies.
Olivia is a member of the school’s National Beta Club/English Honor Society, Ben Franklin Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and Tri-M Honor Society, as well as several school clubs. She is the co-editor and secretary of the school’s literary magazine and talent student-musician. She volunteers as a tutor and at her church, has organized a supply drive for Haiti, and is the recipient of the music and English department awards.
