On Sunday, Sept. 19, the Town of Oyster Bay will rename the TOBAY Beach Boat Basin after former Town Councilman Joseph J. Saladino. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. Supervisor John Venditto and the Town of Oyster Bay will dedicate the basin, renaming it the Joseph J. Saladino Memorial Marina.
The keynote address will be given by Dr. Edward Perkins, the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Ambassador Perkins was also the United States Ambassador to South Africa appointed by President Ronald Reagan and played an important role in the ending of apartheid in that country.
As U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, he held America’s seat on the U.N. Security Council. Ambassador Perkins and Judge Joseph Saladino were close friends as United States Marines and attorneys in the U.S. Marine Corps Central Investigative Division during the Korean War.
The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place at the Boat Basin in front of the flagpole at the Dockmaster’s station. Joseph J. Saladino was instrumental in the further development of the TOBAY Boat Basin and of upgrading recreational facilities at our town parks during his tenure as a T.O.B. Councilman from 1971 until 1980. He retired from a long career of public, civic and community service as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in 1994.
