For inspiring excellence in students and teachers alike, Kevin Harrington, English language arts curriculum associate K-12 for Massapequa Public Schools, will receive the Educator of Excellence for Administration Award by the New York State English Council.
The honor will be presented at the 63rd Annual NYSEC Conference at the Desmond Conference Center in Albany Oct. 16 through 18.
Harrington was nominated by his colleagues who described him as a “kind, sensitive, and passionate” leader whose style “united the department by treating its members like professionals.”
“Staff development sessions became purposeful, teachers’ time was valued, and support was gratuitous,” one colleague stated. “An educator at his very core, Mr. Harrington still inspires the best from everyone.”
Reacting to the news, Harrington quickly pointed to the work of the teachers and the support of the district’s central administration and Board of Education.
“I am in awe and so grateful to the teachers who implement the instructional strategies on a daily basis. They are my heroes and the ones who deserve to be recognized with this award,” he said. “I am blessed to be part of an administrative team that puts such value on literacy instruction, and to work with a central office staff and Board of Education that supports professional development.”
Harrington began his position as English Language Arts Curriculum Associate K-12 with Massapequa Public Schools in July 2009. Under his leadership, new courses such as Monsters in Print and Film, Graphic Novels and Broadcast Journalism were introduced; mastery of the English Regents rose and the number of students taking AP and college-level classes increased. He also revamped the summer reading program and introduced performance-based assessments in lieu of traditional final exams. Harrington said he sets clear and high expectations for all students through the use of modeling, guided instruction, exemplars, checklists, and rubrics; and enhances teaching and learning through the use of technology and alignment of curriculum to the Common Core Learning Standards.
Prior to working in Massapequa, Harrington served for 11 years as an English Language Arts Supervisor in the Baldwin Public Schools and taught in the Glen Cove City Schools for 13 years. He has additional experience conducting professional development workshops to educators and reviewing textbooks and other educational products. He also served as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Communication Arts of Molloy College and directed college musicals. In fact, Harrington has directed more than 300 musicals throughout his career, including those at Massapequa Schools, which, in recent years, have included “Into the Woods,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Hello Dolly!” In addition to school productions, he has directed musicals in venues around the New York area, including the Lincoln Center Out-of-Door Festival and The NYCB Bank Theatre at Westbury.
An East Rockaway resident, Harrington holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Molloy College, a master’s degree in Educational Theatre from New York University and a professional diploma in Educational Leadership and Administration from Long Island University. He is a member of the New York State English Council, Nassau Reading Council, National Council of Teachers of English and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and has presented professional development workshops for these organizations. He is a member of Long Island Language Arts Council and served for two years on the executive board and three years on the conference committee.
“Since his appointment, Mr. Harrington has worked diligently to listen and learn the culture, needs, and expectations of every constituent group in the district,” said Massapequa Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis. “Everyone would agree that he personifies all that is good in education; intelligence, creativity, dedication, skill, loyalty, compassion, enthusiasm and humor. With a smile on his face, he leads by example; setting the stage for excellence. The Massapequa School District is in a better place because of this accomplished administrator.”
