Maria Regina’s fourth and fifth grade students recently explored Native American culture through an exciting adventure. With the guidance of the presenters, Bob Vetter and Jamie Reason, the students experienced first hand the music, government, shelters, lifestyles and community of the Eastern Woodlands People.
Through a variety of hands–on workshops, students gained a better understanding of the beliefs and way of life of these first inhabitants of North America. Students played traditional games, explored tribal government practices, and learned how “technology” was evident in the tools and weapons made and used. Traditional music, storytelling, and dance were also shared, much to the delight of all participants.
More than 60 Business Education students from Massapequa High School will compete in the first annual Nassau County Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial Challenge, April 17, at the Theodore Roosevelt Legislative and Executive Building in Mineola.
Massapequa will join more than 200 students from across the county to present business concepts that can thrive in the current economy. Students with the winning business plans will be awarded scholarships to Hofstra University and other prizes.
The Challenge was announced by Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos during a press conference held at Massapequa High School.
Students from Alfred G. Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School competed against 500 students in the Long Island History Day competition at Hofstra University and brought home three top honors. Berner Middle School student Shannon Brust won third place for her paper “Walt Disney Company”, qualifying her to compete in the state competition on April 29 in Cooperstown. Her teammate, Delaney Batik, won the School Achievement Award for her paper “Miranda v Arizona: A Turning Point in the Rights of the Accused” and Massapequa High School student Luciana Tangari won the School Achievement Award for her exhibit “Emancipation Proclamation”.
Other students who competed were high school students Mackenzie Buckley and James Yahner and middle school students Peter Toutoulis, Ruchy Aggarwal, Christopher Haskell, Chloe Harrell, Angelica Radomski, Natalie Murphy, Elizabeth Murphy, Jake Pulis, Daniella Snyder, Joanna Siemion and Ryan Larkin.
The Massapequa High School Music Department presented Into the Woods, the Tony-Award winning musical that brings theatergoers on an enchanting journey through several Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Characters such as “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack” from Jack and the Beanstalk and “Rapunzel” are intertwined in a plot about a baker and his wife who are on a quest to begin a family, but encounter a witch who puts a curse on them.
Massapequa was one of three Long Island districts recently selected as winners in a statewide video contest. The contest was conducted by the New York State Teacher Center in conjunction with the New York Institute of Technology, and was held to commemorate Digital Learning Day, a national campaign that celebrates teachers and shines a spotlight on successful instructional practice and effective use of technology in classrooms across the country. Massapequa award’s winning entry was a video produced by Berner Middle School Library Media Specialists Anne Nardone and Julie Rogers.
Students from Massapequa High School in Mrs. Bachman’s Introduction To Law class, recently performed Moot Court Trials. Massapequa Park Village Justice Gerard E. Giannattasio presided at these trials, which were conducted, as actual trial would be, without a jury. Special certificates were presented to all the student participants.
Five Massapequa High School seniors were named Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Joseph Mogavero, Melanie Sheehan, Robyn Tse, Joanna Urli and Joseph Zappa are now considered among the top one percent of the nation’s brightest and most promising students. Having five students earn this honor is a record for the district.
The Finalists earned the honor by achieving outstanding scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and by maintaining stellar academic records, participating in school and community service activities, demonstrating leadership abilities and receiving honors and awards during all four years of high school.
