The Nassau County Poet Laureate Society will induct Mario Susko as the new Poet Laureate for Nassau County, June 15 at the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merritts Rd., at 2 p.m. All poetry lovers are welcome.
From 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Nassau County Horticulture Center, award-winning bonsai expert John Capobianco will teach fundamental techniques for turning ordinary nursery stock into a bonsai specimen. The workshop will focus on proper plant selection, branch and root pruning, wiring, and potting. Students will work with hardy tree species. The five major styles will be covered along with container selection. Soil, container, wire, and a tree will be provided. Please bring sturdy chopsticks, good pruning shears, and lunch to class. Fee: $85 for CCE members; $95 for nonmembers. Seating is limited, so registration is required by June 13. The featured speaker will be elite runner Sal Nastasi of Massapequa Park at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library. There is no charge and the general public is invited to attend. Sal most recently completed the 2013 Boston Marathon in 2:35:26, the fastest of any Long Islander in the Marathon. He was the Overall winner of the 2012 David Lerner Associates Long Island Police Appreciation Run. Nastasi, a member of the Bellmore Striders Racing Team and the sales staff of The Runner’s Edge, has a lot to share about many things, including his experience in Boston. Nastasi is also a talented musician, whose band Ready in Ten has entertained at running events, including the 2013 Long Island Marathon EXPO.
