Mighty Massapequa High School Squads On Top In Conference Play

The regular season for spring sports is winding to a close and Massapequa High School squads are heading into the home stretch in their usual winning fashion.

The mighty Massapequa Chiefs baseball squad remains on top of Conference AA-I play with an 8-1 record in league play and a 10-1 mark overall. Since losing a close one to Freeport on March 30, the Chiefs have both the offense and pitching and defense in gear. In recent action, they have taken two straight from Syosset, and three straight from conference rivals Baldwin. Ryan McCormick, Jon Mulford, and Rob Fitzpatrick have hurled winning games from the mound with Mulford allowing only one run on five hits in the 4-1 April 24 win over Baldwin.

Hitting stars for the high-powered Chiefs offense have been Matt Helford, Frank Portaro, Nick Comito and James Ott. Ott had three hits in the April 19 win over Syosset; Comito went three-for-three in the 7-2 April 23 win over Baldwin, while Portaro had two runs batted in during Mulford’s 4-1 triumph. Finally, Matt Helford had the big hit that broke open the 9-8 April 27 win over Baldwin.

The Chiefs will close the regular season with three games against Farmingdale on May 7, 8 and 9. Then it’s on to the playoffs.

The boys lacrosse team also sits on top of league play with, as of press time, a 6-0 record in Conference I play and a 9-1 record overall. The Chiefs have won nine straight, most recently a 10-6 win over Farmingdale. Brandon Savona, Dan Muller, Ian Kirby, Paul Bentz, Craig Berge, Ryan Kirby, Jack Korber, Jimmy Byrns are among the many offensive stars for the Chiefs, while Joe Danaher has been the lacrosse version of Henrik Lundqvist in the goal.

The Chiefs close the season with a May 8 road game at Baldwin and a May 10 home contest versus MacArthur.

Meanwhile, the girls softball team has lost two close contests to Carey and MacArthur High Schools, while scoring a big 13-1 win over Mepham on April 24. Renee Vaiano was the star of the win over Mepham, pitching a two-hitter with six strikeouts. Erin Moran, Emily Gaeta, Kim Giurlando and Renee Vaiano have been hitting stars in the Lady Chiefs four-game winning streak in mid-to-late April. Massapequa will host Long Beach on May 8 in the season finale.

News

Watch out, Massapequa...there’s a “Blizzard” coming through.

The famous frosted ice cream treat, along with a plethora of other tasty menu items, are now available to Long Island residents as of 10 a.m. on June 10, when popular fast-food chain Dairy Queen held their much-anticipated grand opening in Massapequa.

First debuting in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois, Dairy Queen has since grown to more than 4,500 locations nationwide. However, this is its first Long Island-based location since the 1970’s; the chain has been absent from the island since then.

America’s pastime gets the local treatment as Town of Oyster Bay officials announced Massapequa’s John J. Burns Town Park will host a special baseball game between the U.S. Military All-Stars and the Long Island Force High School All-Star team on Tuesday, June 25 at 8 p.m.

The teams will play for the 2013 Supervisor’s Trophy and honor the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform to protect the country.

For a town with such a proud tradition of baseball excellence, the goal is always to reach the mountaintop. There is no reason to be demoralized, however, by a 1-0 season-ending defeat in the Long Island Class-AA Championship game, according to Head Coach Tom Sheedy.

“It was such a competitive game,” said Sheedy. “We had our chances, but today we didn’t come through.”

Massapequa put together a tremendous season, finishing with a 20-6 record and capturing another Nassau County title. They defeated MacArthur 7-5 in the prior week at Farmingdale State College to capture their 10th county title and first since 2009.

Two Massapequa residents from the opposite ends of the age spectrum led a strong contingent of runners down the stretch at Belmont Park and scored great finishes in the 2nd annual Belmont Stakes Blue Ribbon 5-Kilometer Run to Fight Prostate Cancer June 2.

As the first woman in the 15-19 age group to cross the finish line, 16-year-old Chelsea Hroch of North Massapequa finished in 23 minutes and 10 seconds. Meanwhile, 81-year-old Howard Kestenbaum took second place in the 80 to 84 age group, with a time of 43:11.
