Family Bakery Rises

These days, when local residents are more used to storefronts locking their doors for good as opposed to opening them for the first time, there’s nothing like seeing a home-grown business prosper and even grow despite a stifling economy.  

That’s just what the owners of community stalwart Bestever Bakery have accomplished thus far, as they recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their second location, at 1030 Park Blvd. in Massapequa Park, which first opened toward the end of January of this year.

Bellmore resident Vinnie D’Elia opened his first-ever business, the Bestever Bakery, at 17 Broadway in Massapequa 11 years ago. For the longtime journeyman baker, it was the very first step towards realizing a  dream.

“I worked at an Italian bakery for 11 years and a German-American shop for 10 years,” he said. “But I had always wanted to open my own place, so I just finally decided that I was going to go ahead and do it.” He's been in the baking business for about 36 years altogether, he said.

Public support for the Bestever Bakery was immediate, and soon thoughts of a second location entered D’Elia’s mind. In fact, he had a spot in mind — the former location of the famed Di Monda Bakery at 1030 Park Boulevard — and when it became available, he was quick to snatch it up.

“I always liked this location, and when it went up for sale, I just had to take it,” he said. “We’ve worked hard at our business, and it’s taken off very well, so it only made sense to open another shop.”

D’Elia’s daughter, Antoinette, runs the new Park Boulevard location of Bestever Bakery, and has been at her dad’s side in the bakery field since day one. Her sister Ashley runs the Broadway location, and their brother is involved as well, making this truly a family-run business.

“It’s been very awesome doing this for so long, and the new location is amazing...the people here in Massapequa Park are so nice,” she said. “We just love working together as a family...we take pride in what we do. We believe in customer service, and that’s who we are as a family.”

Bestever specializes in a variety of popular bakery fare, including Italian and German-American pastries, cakes and cookies. According to Antoinette, the challenge of both running her own store and living up to her father’s legacy is worth all the hard work that challenge entails.  

“Even though it’s hard work, I love doing it every day,” she said. “This is my life, this is what I want to do.”

Members of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce, along with local politicians and dignitaries attended the ribbon-cutting to wish D’Elia and his family the best in their new endeavor. Among the attendees was Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto, who lives in the neighborhood.

“First of all, I live in Massapequa Park, and we take pride when any new business opens up their doors,” he said. “This storefront, for many years, housed the Di Monda Bakery, which was a favorite of everybody. They had sold it, and now the Bestever Bakery has come in, and we’ve heard so many great things about them. We just want to welcome them to our neighborhood and wish them the best of luck.”

D’Elia said that there are a lot of bakeries out there to choose from, but there is a good reason why Bestever Bakery lives up to its name.

“We give nice customer service...we take care of all the people who come in,” he said. “My daughters run the stores, and we try to be nice to everybody. We come out and talk to everyone, say hello, and everyone knows us by name. If you give us a try, you’ll see the difference.”


Two hundred business students from high schools across Nassau County, including Massapequa High School, competed for scholarships and cash awards—more than $33,000 in all—from various sponsors at Nassau County’s annual Comptroller’s Entrepreneurial Challenge.

The events on Sept. 11, 2001 had a profound effect on nearly all in the tri-state area, but for first responders, the effects were overwhelming. Long-time Massapequa resident Michael Smith, a member of the New York Fire Department, experienced those effects firsthand.

“While I’ve always been a person that could appreciate life, after 9/11 I became so distraught,” he said. “I realized I need to do something I want to do — something I love to do.”

A 30-year veteran of the fire department, Smith retired in 2002. He and his wife of 33 years, Teresa, began to look for a place they could enjoy life. This mindset brought them to the East End of Long Island, where they often went for day trips. They settled down in a home in Orient Point in 2004; in a home that needed quite a bit of work. And when it was time to landscape the property, a new idea took root — a vineyard.


Massapequa athletes recently received honors from their coaches at Kellenberg Memorial High School.

Each season, the coaches of all of the Kellenberg teams choose one member of their team who stands out as an athlete that has worked hard to improve themselves in their chosen sport.

The Farmingdale State women’s lacrosse team won the first game of their Spring Break trip to North Carolina with a victory over Greensboro College. In wet and muddy conditions, the Rams (8-1) held an 8-5 lead at the half and took the eventual 13-10 win.

In the first half and tied 2-2, the Pride (7-5) pulled ahead 4-2 with two unassisted goals by junior attack Nadya Fedun. Farmingdale State answered with four straight scores for a 6-4 advantage, on goals by juniors Alyssa Handel, Nicole Marzocca and Massapequan Jackie Kennedy.

Sophomore attack Ashlynn Parks put Greensboro within a goal at the 7:03 mark, but the Rams scored two more to lead 8-5 at the halftime break.
