Town of Oyster Bay honors ATF hero agent

It was a melancholy Fourth of July in Massapequa last week. While the annual parade took place to a large crowd, there was a more subdued ceremony in another part of the village.

On the morning of July 4, the Town of Oyster Bay dedicated a roadway triangle at the corner of Biltmore Boulevard and Frankel Boulevard in Massapequa in memory of ATF Special Agent John Capano, who perished while struggling to subdue a robbery suspect at a Seaford pharmacy.

Dori Capano addresses those in attendance for the dedication. In attendance was Capano’s widow, Dori, plus the couple’s two children, John and Natalie. Scott Parlatore, Capano’s longtime friend and neighbor, joined with Supervisor John Venditto and the town in helping coordinate the event and to design the memorial triangle.

“John cared about this country, his family, his friends, the community and everyone else with whom he came in contact,” said Venditto. “He will forever be remembered as a hero who put himself in harm’s way in the service of others. This dedication ceremony is the town’s way of showing how much we cared about him.”

ATF Special Agent Capano was a 23-year veteran of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who went on missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was a patriot and proud resident of Massapequa. He resided near where the dedication ceremony in his honor will take place. To those who served with him professionally, he stood out, even among elite law enforcement officials. The flag that was hoisted at the memorial triangle has also flown over the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq in honor of Capano.

Today’s dedicated flag and monument, situated prominently in Massapequa’s Biltmore Shores community where he and his family proudly lived for many years, will serve as reminder to all residents of his sacrifice.”

Despite what district officials call unprecedented increases in state-mandated employer pension contributions, as well as rising health insurance costs, the overall budget is up just over $2.7 million.

Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together LI volunteers, sponsors from Long Island Board of Realtors and their associates from Albany, working on a home in Cedarhurst damaged by Sandy. After Massapequa resident Sol Goldstein and several friends helped finish building a house for a family 20 years ago for Habitat for Humanity, they had a question: “What do we do now?” They were all retired, had enjoyed working together and accomplishing something for a family in need, and wanted to do more.

“I was looking for something [to do] hands-on,” said Joe Botkin, of Williston Park, a retired principal, who had worked with Goldstein in building the home.

Golf Course To Be Named In Honor Of Colby

On Saturday, May 18, the Town of Oyster Bay will conduct a ceremony to officially re-name its golf course in honor of Joseph Colby, a resident of Massapequa Park who served as the Town of Oyster Bay’s 56th supervisor. The Honorable Joseph Colby was appointed supervisor in 1977 and was elected to that office five times in the following ten years. He was then elected as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in 1988, a post he held through his retirement from public service in 1992. The unveiling will take place at the main entrance of the course off South Woods Road in Woodbury.

“When the sign for Honorable Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is unveiled, it will celebrate an outstanding career in public service,” Supervisor John Venditto said. “Joseph Colby has always had the needs of the public as his top priority and has been widely respected for his innovation and responsiveness. This golf course will now forever bear his name as a tribute to his outstanding legacy.”
