The subject of roads remains the main topic of business for the Village of Massapequa Park.

At the April 27 meeting, the village board of trustees awarded a bid for the 2009-2010 Microsurfacing Requirements Contract to Thomas H. Gannon & Sons, Inc., located in Middle Island. The amount of the winning bid was $630,937.40.

According to village officials, microsurfacing is a sealer that is put on existing roads, all in an attempt to prolong the life of those roads. The process fills in existing cracks on the roads. It is not meant as a permanent solution to road decay, but it does get a few more years out of the roads. A spokesman for the Department of Public Works said that about 10 roads in the village would be subject to the microsurfacing technique.

Also at the April 27 meeting, the BOT returned bid deposits in the amount of $50 for the Village Beautification of the south side of Merrick Road, between Harbor Lane and Whitewood Drive to the following bidders:

• Concrete Plus, Inc., Islip

• P.S.L. Industries, Inc., Ronkonkoma

• H & A Landscape of L.I., Inc., Hicksville

• J. Anthony Enterprises, Holbrook.

At its April 13 meeting, BOT awarded a bid for the Merrick Road Beautification Project to Valente Contracting Corp., 77 Jackson Ave., Mineola. The amount of the bid was $235,795.

In addition to village beautification, the BOT, at recent meetings, has directed village agencies to make several stop sign studies. More specifically, BOT referred to the Planning Commission the study of stop signs at the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Van Buren Street.

It also directed that same commission to make another study of stop signs, this one at the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue, north of Clark Boulevard.
