As noted in last week's issue of The Massapequan Observer, the 5th Annual Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (UCPN) will be held on March 1 at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay.

The article also noted that this year's event will be held in memory of Lenny Ferraro, a past co-chairman and longtime Town of Oyster Bay employee. Ferraro was a Massapequa resident who passed away in November. Lenny was one of the co-founders of the plunge and a regular participant as well. Swimmers from all over Long Island will honor his memory by keeping the event moving forward with great enthusiasm.

Also on March 1, Z100's disc jockey Greg T will brave the cold water and take the plunge for UCPN. He invites all fans to sponsor him by going to www.ucpn.org and signing up on his Plunge Page. To keep swimmers and fans warm there will be hot soup donated by H.R. Singleton's restaurant and hot coffee, tea and hot chocolate donated by Dunkin' Donuts. Volunteers from the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company will serve grilled hot dogs to everyone's delight. The Showmobile will be on hand with DJ Danny Sullivan and there will be music and dancing Polar Bears and a unique polar bear ice sculpture.

Last year, an especially fun highlight of the day was when Dee Berger, principal of the Children's Learning center at UCPN, dipped her ten toes into the icy waters. Dee's toes were among the most valuable there due to the sponsorship from UCPN Board member Robert Griffin who pledged $1,000 for each toe Dee plunged into the bay. Dee commented that she was happy to "take one for the team" and dipped all ten toes in with gusto to earn the $10,000 for UCPN. Virginia Huie of News 12 interviewed Dee for a segment that appeared on News 12 LI that evening.

The UCPN is grateful to the Town of Oyster Bay for hosting the swim and all the swimmers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters of the Plunge. Contact the UCPN if you are interested in participating at 378-2000 ext. 648 or visit www.ucpn.org for swimmer registration forms and other information.
