Over the past week, a crime wave plagued Massapequa, as Nassau County police were involved in a car chase, plus two attempted robberies, one that resulted in severe injury to the victim.

The Eighth Squad reports the details of an arrest on Monday, Nov. 25, at 3:09 p.m. in Amityville.

According to detectives, as part of a narcotics investigation, Bureau of Special Operations Officers attempted to make a vehicle and traffic stop of two subjects in North Massapequa. The driver in an attempt to flee drove towards one of the officers, causing the officer to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

Both subjects, detectives added, then fled the scene driving recklessly onto the Southern State Parkway, at one point backing into the officer's vehicle. The subject then drove his vehicle off the road and got stuck in the mud. As the officers approached on foot and attempted to remove subjects from the vehicle and place them under arrest, the subjects drove away, dragging one of the officers whose hand was stuck in the driver's side door. The officer fired his service weapon in an attempt to defend his life.

The subjects again fled the scene and the pursuit continued by police until it ended on Locust Avenue, Amityville where the defendant Lerone Copeland, 27, of Amityville was taken into custody and removed to an area hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the left arm.

A second subject, described as a black male, thin build, approximately 5'10" is still at large. The investigation is ongoing. Both police officers were treated and released from the hospital.

The defendant is being charged with Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance 4th Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, Assault 3rd Degree, two charges of Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, Reckless Driving, and Unlicensed Operator.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

According to detectives, the victim was walking south on Route 110 from Amityville to Massapequa. While he was walking in the rear playground area at the Northeast School, two males hopped the fence of the school and approached the victim. One suspect punched the victim knocking him to the ground, detectives added. Both suspects kicked the victim in the face and removed the victim's cell phone and currency, detectives said. The suspects, detectives added, fled on foot to a small blue vehicle parked in the lot in front of the school.

The victim was transported to New Island Hospital in Bethpage by private auto. The victim suffered severe injuries to his right eye and was advised by doctors that the orbital bone was broken.

Both suspects are described as black males, six feet in height, with thin builds, between the ages of 27 and 30. Both suspects had thick beards. Detectives ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

According to detectives, as the 37-year-old male victim entered his vehicle which was parked in the driveway of his East Walnut Street home he was confronted by two subjects, both armed with handguns.

The victim then started his vehicle and attempted to back out of his driveway when a small green vehicle blocked his progress, detectives said. The victim, detectives added, continued backing, struck the green vehicle and drove away. Both subjects and the green vehicle fled the scene in an unknown direction.

One subject was described as a black male, 5'7," 150 lbs, with a thin build, unshaven, wearing a black wool cap. The second subject was described as a black male with a heavy build.
