On Nov. 7 the East Meadow Public Library held a special Classic Film program to commemorate the greatest Jewish movie comedians of all time. It is a well-known fact throughout Nassau and Suffolk how residents and film buffs flock to his presentations, but on this day and with this program John Carpenter again proved that he is worthy of his notoriety as the Massapequa Park Movie Man.

To visually illustrate this program topic, Carpenter pulled from out of his private movie vault the rarest titles that other historians have been heard saying that they didn't even exist in any collection. It's no wonder why program director Jude Schanzer has employed Carpenter since she found him in 2004.

Here is a listing of the rare to see titles that the Massapequa Park Movie Man chose to project: Mae Questel as a Yiddish Betty Boopesque Cat in the bouncing ball cartoon That Old Gang Of Mine, from 1927 the Hal Roach silent movie and first screen Jewish stereotype comedian Max Davidson in Don't Tell Everything, from 1931 Cab Waiting with a very young Jack Benny made in Paramount's Astoria studios. The rarest on the program was the 1930 Talkie Musical Feature Be Yourself with the fresh from Ziegfeld Broadway star Fannie Brice.

The youths watching these historic gems were filled with exuberance of life and song and a few danced and sang to the smiles of the senior residents that attended. Computer artist Kelly Gordon even created a true recreative genre-like poster to add to the feel of this Carpenter classic film event, which will be repeated locally in 2009 at the Massapequa Park Bar Harbour Library at 40 Harbor Lane.
