Temple Sinai of Massapequa and Amityville has announced that it is inviting all first timers - area residents who have never attended Temple Sinai - to join its congegation without charge during the full year 2008-2009. This gift to the community coincides with the 50th anniversary of the formation of this longstanding reform synagogue.
Temple Sinai also has an "open door policy" for all Friday evening Shabbat services, followed by an Oneg Shabbat (refreshments and friendly conversation) after services. Worship services begin at 8 p.m., except for the first Friday night of the month (family service) and holidays, which begin at 7:30 p.m.
New members can participate in all aspects of Temple Sinai's religious and social programs and not pay membership dues until July 1, 2009. Recently, a major New York newspaper reported that most Jews do not belong to a temple. Temple Sinai hopes that by welcoming first timers, as well as young families, interfaith couples, senior citizens and single adults, the percentage of Jewish residents belonging to a temple can be increased.
Temple Sinai offers religious school from the first grade through Bar/Bat Mitzvah and accommodates members with special membership rates. Holiday tickets are free to members and their families (parents, married children).
Rabbi Janise Poticha and Cantor Alan Stein preside over worship services.
Temple Sinai is a Reform congregation affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism. It is located at 270 Clocks Blvd. (south of Merrick Road), Massapequa.
