(Ed. Note: The following open letter was sent to Councilman Anthony D. Macagone and is printed here at the author's request.)
I read in a recent Massapequan Observer your press release (Residents Can Take Down Signs) regarding unsightly signs on trees, poles, etc., with reference to yard sales, block parties etc. Councilman, this problem can be alleviated, if current county ordinances are strictly enforced, by giving summons to offenders - but they are not.
Councilman, the worst offenders for the above are politicians - like yourself, who do not take down election signs after the event has taken place. Many are still all over town. Both political parties are to blame for this, but the worse offenders are the Republicans since most of the Democratic signs are taken down by the Republicans (during an election) - (I know, I've seen it.)
A the end of the mid-year election, I contacted Peter Schmidt (not my job) and Thomas Suozzi (not my job) about this situation. I got the brush-off and nothing was done.
Can you just envision what we are in store for this fall with the presidential and congressional elections?
Since we are now ecology conscious, perhaps you can now do something. I certainly hope so. These signs are disgusting.
