After years of planning and environmental testing, the Nassau County Legislature has awarded the contract to commence work on the restoration of the Massapequa Preserve. The Massapequa Creek Stream Augmentation and Pond Restoration Project is finally under way. "I have worked tirelessly to ensure that the improvements to the Massapequa Creek Preserve were a priority for the Nassau County Legislature, and I am happy to report that approvals have been secured to allow the work to begin," said Legislator Peter J. Schmitt.
The Massapequa Preserve contains streams, ponds and vital freshwater wetlands which have been severely impacted by the installation of sewer systems as well as increased groundwater consumption. Local sewer systems have contributed to reduced streamflow throughout the Massapequa Creek Preserve. This has caused pond levels to decrease or dry up completely.
The restoration project includes the installation of a shallow well pumping system, the dredging of several ponds, and the diversion of storm water run-off. This project will restore the continuous flow of the creek in order to restore and maintain water levels, prevent further erosion, protect wetland plant species and wildlife, and potentially expand the fisheries within the lakes and ponds.
