At its April 3 meeting, the Massapequa Board of Education unanimously appointed Charles Sulc as Superintendent of Schools to serve from the period of Sept. 12, 2008 to June 30, 2012.

A 38-year veteran of the district, Sulc began his career in Massapequa in 1969. For the past 17 years, he has served as Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and most recently, Acting Superintendent.

"Charles Sulc has served as the district's Acting Superintendent since June 20, 2007," stated Board of Education President Richard Krebs. "During that time he has led by example and has demonstrated the integrity, professionalism, experience, and commitment the Board is looking for in the district's next Superintendent. For nearly a year, we have had an opportunity to work very closely with Mr. Sulc and the Board is confident he is the right choice."

In other news at the April 3 meeting, the Board of Education received the following reports:

• Berner Middle School Initiatives - Mr. Scarallo

• Overview of the 2008-09 Budget - Mr. Adcock

The Board of Education acted on a variety of new business, including resolutions to:

• Discuss Proposed Transportation Policies 8410 - Student Transportation (& Regulation 8410R), 8411 - School Bus Scheduling & Routing (& Regulation 8411-R), 8413 - Transportation for Non-Public School Students, 8414 - School Bus Safety

• Approve the Memorandum of Agreement between the Massapequa Board of Education and the Massapequa School Nurses Association for the period July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2010.

• Accept a donation from the Gruber Family of a scholarship in the amount of $5,000 in memory of Michael Gruber for the benefit of a deserving senior who participated in CYO programs for three or more years.

• Accept a donation from the Massapequa Lions Club of a one time senior award in the amount of $500 in memory of Michael Fitzgibbon for the benefit of a deserving senior who will be attending a vocational school.

• Accept a donation from the Ortolani Family of a scholarship in the amount of $500 in memory of Carol Ortolani for the benefit of a deserving senior who has lost a parent or sibling during their school years due to a serious illness.

• Accept a donation from VFW Post 7277 of an annual scholarship in the amount of $500 for the benefit of a deserving senior who has a parent or grandparent who is a member of a VFW Post in the United States.

• Authorize the signature of contracts with Aetna and an Administrative Agreement with PPI Benefits Solution for dental insurance.

• Reject all proposals for transportation services received on January 25, 2008 and authorize the district to re-advertise as a sealed bid.

• Approve appropriation adjustments amounting to $482,600.

• Recognition of National Merit Scholars; Alec Slatky and Christopher Petrik

• Recognition of varsity wrestling team named New York State Scholar Athlete Team

• Recognition of art teacher Ms. Vickie Ahearn and Coordinating Chairperson of Art Ms. Barbara Mims on their achievement with Ames and Lockhart students on the Books of Hope project. This project was recognized as a Chase Multimedia Award Winner.
