Mission Fit visited Plainedge Middle School on Dec. 6 for a 50-minute assembly on the importance of staying active after school.

The Plainedge sixth-graders are participating in a five-month competition called, The Most Fit Kid Competition. This competition is a way of keeping the kids active after the school bell rings. Every week the kids and their parents e-mail or mail Mrs. Levittown, Melissa Sheehan, their activities for the week for points. At the end of the five months the child with the most points gets a $200 gift certificate to the store of their choice. The top five finalists will also receive cash prizes.

Assemblyman Joseph Saladino kicked off the program and was instrumental in bringing up the energy in the room. The kids did a fitness demonstration, sang the Mission Fit Creed and were enthusiastic the entire program. There are 67 sixth-graders enrolled in the program.

Mission Fit has traveled to many schools on Long Island and was created by Melissa Sheehan and her husband Dennis Sheehan, Esq. in April of 2007 as a way of giving back to the community and helping to keep our children healthy and strong. In November, Melissa competed in the Mrs. New York State Pageant and lost in the finals. She plans on competing again in 2010 for the crown.

Mission Fit is growing and hopes to touch every middle school on Long Island in the next 18 months.
