The fall sports season for athletes in the Massapequa Public School District left coaches, student athletes and their community with much to be proud of when the same four teams as last year achieved championship status.
"This is not an accident," stated Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Igor Bishko. "It is a testament to the Massapequa athletic program and the coaching staff who has consistency and the ability to lead these teams." The athletes' commitment to good sportsmanship and exemplary conduct when they travel is also evident by the sportsmanship awards that Massapequa teams receive year after year. In addition, every fall team - 10 in all - was designated Scholar Athlete Team by New York State, an award given to teams that maintain an academic average of 90 percent or above.
The Massapequa Board of Education opened the doors of Massapequa High School - Main Campus' Baldwin Auditorium to recognize the outstanding teams in the fall line up. First up was the Field Hockey team, under the direction of Tisha Werner. The team finished the season with 15 wins, 4 ties and 0 losses, and received the Nassau County Championship title for the second year in a row. In addition, the team boasted two All-State level athletes and seven All-County level athletes. This is the Field Hockey team's first conference title since 1980.
The Boys Soccer team led by Keith Stanley was recognized for their exemplary conduct on the field with the highly coveted Sportsmanship Award for Nassau County. This distinction is reserved for those teams that demonstrate the highest level of commitment to fair play and respect for opposing teams and coaches. The Girls Soccer team was also honored for receiving their fifth straight Nassau County Championship, ending the season with a record of 16 wins, 3 ties and just 1 loss.
"The team is determined, persistent and dedicated," stated head coach Kerri Jacobs, who is retiring as head coach after five successful years. The Girls Soccer team also boasts 16 Scholar Athletes and two team members who received All-State level status.
Finally, the Girls Volleyball team, coached by Carol Ann Habeeb-Kiel had an outstanding run for the fall season, concluding with a 16-0 league record and an overall record of 68 wins and 3 losses. The team GPA was an impressive 94 percent and many of the players received individual awards in addition to the team receiving the New York State Sportsmanship Award. The team has been Nassau County champions for eight years in a row, and this season, were not only Long Island champions, but also won at the State level, making them the New York State Class AA champions.
"This team showed unbelievable sportsmanship and class at the State games," stated Bishko. "We had the largest group of fans and supporters."
