When the month of December rolls around, everyone begins to think about the holidays. Massapequa's Bob Holub, aka Santa Claus, begins to put his Christmas visits in order.
For the past 42 years, Holub has made hundreds of children and adults as well happy portraying Santa. During the entire month and dressed up in his velvet Santa suit, he makes 21 party visits to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, school PTA gatherings, children's hospitals, private house parties; and during the Christmas week, when the tide is high, he boards Captain Lou's 65-foot party boat and sails up and down the Freeport canals waving to the onlookers along the way. Earlier in the day he fashions the boat with colored lights, loudspeakers for Christmas carols and for his ho ho greetings.
On Christmas Eve he makes 26 more visits to private homes, many of which he has been visiting for more than 20 years. He finds the gifts left outside the door that the parents want him to give to the anxiously waiting boys and girls. Santa stays for a while so all the youngsters can have their pictures taken on his lap. When it's time for Santa to leave, everyone loves to follow him to his Santamobile that he has equipped with red flashing lights.
Holub has Christmas in his heart all year-round. He belongs to the Historical Society, Kiwanis, Jones Beach Power Squadron, Chamber of Commerce, Biltmore Shores Civic Association and is active in the St. Rose of Lima R. C. Church. He says he can't wait until next year and has the chance to make everybody happy all over again.
