The sixth-graders at McKenna Elementary School of Massapequa Park love pizza, but they love helping others even more.
One of their teachers, Don Seddio developed an educational program where the class created a pizza-making company, and sold Thomas' English Muffin pizzas to school staff members. Their ingenuity helped to raise $148 for a charity of their choice.
The project involved two teams who developed a company name, menu, order form, and pricing list to practice monetary calculations; they also researched pizza facts and recipes.
Then, they made the pizza themselves in the school cafeteria in assembly line manner. The teams graphed results, interpreted surveys and had to give a speech presenting the charity to which they wished to donate.
The winning team was called the Yo-Yo Pizza Company and after an eloquent presentation by student Victoria Raabe, the students voted on donating the proceeds to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. On June 12, they visited the House to present their donation and received a tour of the House as well. Accompanied by their teachers, Don Seddio, Denise Harris, and Susan Femminella, the students, Victoria Raabe, Amanda Prystupa, Anthony Stabile, Gus Ocampo, Billy Bontemps, Jake Cunnigham, Connor Bergin, Sal Furci and Nick Laera, were delighted to donate to this cause.
