No village in Long Island puts on a parade like Massapequa.
This year's Memorial Day Parade, held on Monday, May 27 was no exception. Up to 1,000 people lined the streets of the village as an impressive array of floats and marchers entertained the crowd.
The parade was sponsored by American Legion Post 1066 and VFW Post 7763. It started out on Front Street and made its way to Park Boulevard, turning west onto Clark Boulevard before ending up on Broadway.
After the parade, there was a ceremony at Klestinec Park to commemorate veterans both local and national who have served the nation in times of war and peace.
Among the many dignitaries who attended were Village of Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna, US Congressman Peter King, Nassau County Legislator Peter Schmitt, and State Assemblyman Joseph Saladino.
The parade also featured the usual number of Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, plus the Massapequa High School Marching Band and numerous other local clubs and organizations.
Most of all, the parade was graced by the appearances of numerous veterans from the American Legion and VFW posts. With Memorial Day 2007 behind us, the village can now gear up for another big event: Its annual Independence Day Parade.
