Paul Murphy and Una Broderick led a happy brigade of 208 runners across the finish line at the Town of Oyster Bay's Marjorie Post Park on April 28, as GLIRC combined with the Long Island Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America to stage the 2nd annual Guts & Glory 5 Kilometer Run.

Athletes from the Massapequas were out in force for this year's run, and won more than their share of the awards.

Leading the local contingent was Matt Fassullo of Massapequa, who finished in 20 minutes, 50 seconds and earned first-place honors in the 16-19 age group.

Other local award winners were John Stauber of Massapequa (22:14), who took second-place honors in the Clydesdale 200 pound-plus weight division in 22 minutes, 14 seconds; 10-year-old Patrick Sheehan of Massapequa Park (32:07), who was the first-place finisher in the 12 and under age group; Massapequa speedsters Michelle Peluso (31:23), Danielle Scicutelli (31:24) and Christina Vitale (33:28), who scored 1-2-3 in the Female 16-19 age group; Marc Townsend of Massapequa (24:28), who took second place in the 30-34 age group; Karen Conkling of Massapequa (23:55), who finished second among the women in the 40-44 age group, Karen Serkes of Massapequa Park (25:34) and Anita Von Himmel of North Massapequa (26:53), who scored second and third respectively among the women in the 45-49 age group, and Howard Kestenbaum of Massapequa Park (36:54), who was the second-place finisher in the 75-79 age group.

All in all, it was a very productive morning for Massapequa runners.

The entire net proceeds of the Run and the accompanying Walk were dedicated to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation and its efforts to cure and prevent Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis through research, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these digestive diseases through education and support.

The run wound its way through the streets of Massapequa Park, finishing up with the last half mile on the paths of Marjorie Post Park.

Several public officials were on hand to help Long Island Chapter Executive Director Edda Ramsdell and the other great people at the forefront of the battle against digestive diseases.

From Nassau County, Legislature Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs and County Legislator David Denenberg were among those on hand, along with Suffolk County Legislator Jon Cooper.

On hand from the host Town of Oyster Bay were Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone, Town Councilwoman Beth Faughnan, Town Councilwoman Rose Walker, and Town Clerk Steven Labriola.
