Two Massapequa boys are coming back to play for the Long Island Ducks this year.
Ducks team officials recently announced the signing of some familiar faces that have played instrumental roles in the team's recent run of postseason appearances.
Pitchers Pat Ahearne and Tim Cain, along with two Massapequa natives, infielder/pitcher Rob Cafiero and outfielder Kevin Haverbusch, will all rejoin the club for the 2007 season.
Massapequa Park native Cafiero will suit up for this third season with the Ducks, and his sixth at the professional level.
In 2006, Cafiero appeared in 42 games for Long Island at first base, batting .270 in 111 at bats. He also saw time on the mound, hurling 16 innings and posting an ERA of 3.38.
Kevin Haverbusch hit .252 with nine home runs and 55 RBI for the Ducks in 2006. The fans favorite memory of the Massapequa resident will surely be his three-run homer on July 10 of last year, which helped the team clinch the first half North Division title.
Continuing the tradition of showcasing some of Long Island's best homegrown ballplayers, the team also announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Randy Leek.
Leek, born in Mineola and now a resident of Levittown, will play in his eighth professional season and first with the Ducks.
The southpaw spent the 2006 season with Memphis (AAA, Cardinals) of the Pacific Coast League. In 2005, Leek finished second in the Texas League in wins, going 15-7 for Springfield (AA, Cardinals). For his career, Leek has compiled a 52-48 record and a 3.72 ERA.
Veteran right-hander Ahearne will enter his 16th season of professional baseball after finishing third in the Atlantic League in wins while pitching for the Ducks in 2006.
Ahearne, whose career includes time at the major league level with the Detroit Tigers, had arguably his best season last year, setting the Ducks single season record for wins with a 12-4 record and 3.47 ERA in 115.2 innings of work.
Ahearne's impressive performance in his first summer with Long Island earned him the start in Game One of the Ducks postseason series against archrival Bridgeport. Over his long career, Ahearne has worked primarily as a starting pitcher, accumulating 114 career victories and a 3.95 ERA.
Tim Cain, the Atlantic League's all-time wins leader, will also pitch his second season in a Ducks uniform in 2007. Cain worked in 25 games for the Ducks last season, six of them as a starter, posting a 5-4 record in 66.2 innings. The upcoming season will be the veteran's 17th in professional baseball and 10th in the Atlantic League.
