Massapequa Park's own John Carpenter, has been invited to be the guest speaker and show his latest documentary film Smelling Like a Rose at the March 7, Wantagh Kiwanis Club dinner meeting. The meeting will be held at the Per Un' Angelo restaurant, 3275 Byron Street in Wantagh, starting at 7 p.m.

Carpenter is expected to talk about his near death accident that has kept him off the Broadway stage for the past several years. However, his love for show business keeps him in the limelight, as he continues showing his 2,000-plus collection of vintage films at film festivals, club meetings and libraries. At the time of his setback, Carpenter was starring in the Off Broadway Musical, The Bard.

Now, Carpenter has another goal he is involved with, one entitled "Helping Our School Children." He is lending his name to a campaign that will benefit children who attend charter schools, daycare centers, preschools and public schools' kindergartens.

According to Carpenter, the main theme of the project is collecting gently-used children's books. The campaign has been dubbed "John Carpenter's Building Our Children's Future" one school at a time. All the supplies should be put in a plastic bag and dropped off at the Minuteman Press in Massapequa Park. Carpenter said that he is trying to make similar arrangements with other Minuteman Press outlets. Carpenter is hoping that other service clubs will follow the Wantagh Club's lead and make the campaign a club project. Carpenter said that he was surprised to hear that there are so many schools in need of classroom supplies.
