Greta Hayes will perform the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Saint-Saens with the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 28, 2 p.m. at the Berner Middle School, Carmans Mill Road, Massapequa. The orchestral works include Rossini's Barber of Seville Overture, excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, selections from a Broadway musical, marches and other works.
Cellist Greta Hayes, now 14 years old, started cello at age 4 with the Suzuki Program at C.W. Post College in Brookville. She currently attends the Juilliard Pre-College program where she studies with Andre Emelianoff.
In May 2005, Ms. Hayes won the Juilliard Concerto Competition and performed the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto with the Pre-College Chamber Orchestra. This past summer, Greta participated in the Summer Chamber Music Festival at Walnut Hill, and had the opportunity to perform in various locations in Massachusetts and Paris. She attends Locust Valley High School, where she plays on the school field hockey team, and occasionally performs chamber music with her two sisters.
The Massapequa Philharmonic is composed of about 70 local musicians and is one of the largest orchestras on Long Island. Guest Conductor David Ramael began his musical studies in his native Belgium, where he studied at the Royal Brussels Conservatory and the Free Brussels University.
In 1996, he was awarded the Erasmus Fellowship for study abroad in the European Union, which he spent at the University of Vienna. In 1998, he received the prestigious Belgian American Education Foundation Fellowship for study in the United States, and chose to study at the University of Minnesota where he obtained the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in conducting.
Dr. Ramael currently serves on the teaching faculty at Hofstra University where he conducts the Hofstra Symphony Orchestra, the Hofstra String Orchestra, and the annual opera production.
